Fake delivery driver: how to protect your business and customers

The driver is the final link between you and the customer — which is exactly why they've become a scam target. Someone poses as your driver to divert an order, pull data from the customer, or collect a payment that never reaches you. Here's how to protect the last mile.

How the scam usually works

• Fake driver at the counter: someone shows up to "pick up" an order that isn't theirs.
• Interception: the scammer presents themselves to the customer as your driver and charges an off-the-books amount.
• Data harvesting: they use delivery as an excuse to ask for personal or payment information.

Warning signs

• A driver you don't recognize wanting to pick up an order without confirmation.
• A surprise extra charge "at delivery."
• A request for data or a PIN "to confirm delivery."

How to protect your business

• Identify your drivers: know who's going out with each order.
• Pickup/confirmation code: the order only leaves (or is handed over) with an agreed code.
• Don't expose customer data beyond what delivery requires.
• Tell the customer who will deliver and through which channel, so they distrust anyone else.

How to guide your customer

Tell customers: payment and data are handled in the order, not at the door. A legitimate driver doesn't ask for a PIN or charge a surprise "extra fee."

Take the money and the doubt away from the door

Most of these scams thrive on "blind" delivery: no confirmation of who delivers and manual payment at the door. When the order has a trackable status and payment was already made online, there's little room left for an impostor.
