The Pix tax scam: the fake news that uses the tax authority's name

Every now and then the story resurfaces that Pix is about to be taxed and that you need to "pay a fee" or "regularize" to keep using it. It's a scam. Brazil's tax authority (Receita Federal) has clarified that there is no tax on Pix and that messages charging one in the agency's name are fraud. Here's how to avoid it — and how to guide your customer.

What's actually true

• Pix is not taxed for individuals in normal use.
• The tax authority does not charge fees by WhatsApp, SMS, or phone, nor send a link to "unlock" Pix.
• Financial activity has always had reporting rules — that is not a "new Pix tax."

How the scam usually works

• An urgent message: "your Pix will be blocked, pay the fee to regularize."
• A fake link mimicking the tax authority or your bank, asking for data or a payment.
• A "regularization" charge or Pix that lands in the scammer's account.

Warning signs

• Urgency and threats ("it will be blocked," "last chance").
• A link asking for login, data, or payment.
• A charge in the name of a government agency through an informal channel.

How to protect yourself (and your customer)

• Don't click links in messages about a "Pix fee."
• Verify any doubt only through official channels of the tax authority or your bank.
• As a restaurant, never ask a customer to "pay a Pix fee to release the order" — and warn that no legitimate party does that.
